I live in Austin, Texas and I absolutely adore living here. I have family reasons why I need to be here, but I am lucky because it is exactly where I want to live and if all constraints were removed, I would remain exactly where I am. For the better part of 20 years I lived in Corpus Christi, Texas and stayed there because I have a love of wind sports, first windsurfing, and more recently kitesurfing. I have been going to Maui since 1984 averaging 2-3 times year and love it there, but I always like coming home. If I didn’t live here, I’d live there.
Although I live in Austin, I try to live Aloha, usually failing miserably. But I get up the next day and try all over again. I try to practice Aloha, knowing that I will never perfect it. One can live in Hawaii and not practice Aloha. It is entirely optional. Aloha is the Spirit of the Hawaiian Islands. It is kindness, compassion, patience and tolerance. It means hello and goodbye and bless you, all at the same time.
The Hawaiian Islands are bathed in the Trade Winds which blow from the northeast to the southwest and is one of the main reasons I started going there. Maui in particular has the best combination of topography and wind for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It also has great surf, as all the Hawaiian Islands do. When the trades are working and some north shore surf has come in, there is no better place in the world for a windsurfer or kitesurfer. I have spent many, many days at Kanaha Beach Park. God willing, I’ve got more in the future.
